New York Climate Action Group (nycag.org) is an alliance of urban grassroots environmental activists. While climate change is a global problem, we feel its effect locally and believe that communities can make powerful positive changes for the climate. We live in New York City and want to see our city and state administration take effective action. We identified areas where as a city we can rapidly reduce our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Our current campaign to end New York City's use of tropical hardwoods is based on a simple equation.
The City of New York is the single largest consumer of tropical hardwoods in North America. The municipality of New York City uses tropical hardwoods to construct boardwalks, park benches and Staten Island Ferry docking terminals. Under the State's jurisdiction NYMTA used tropical hardwoods for railroad ties in the city's subway system. Join us in our effort to hold the city and state accountable for their contribution to tropical deforestation and climate change, and demand that New York City substitute sustainable local alternatives for the tropical hardwoods it is currently using.
